Howdy! I'm not knowledgeable with computer OS issues, so I'm posting here in hopes of getting advice on my next steps.
Backstory:
Two nights ago my HP laptop power cord was kicked out and the computer powered off without proper log-off or Windows shutdown after it ran out of juice.
When I booted in the morning it did a disk consistency check and corrected a bunch of errors. The errors were found in the 2nd step of 3 during the disk check. 1st and 3rd steps were clear. (Sorry, I can't remember what the steps are called.)
When I logged in, I tried launching Firefox and I just got the pointer with the blue circle churning away. I couldn't launch anything else or get the Task Manager up for a restart. Seemed like everything was frozen except for the waiting pointer. I could move the mouse but couldn't open apps or the start menu. CTRL + DEL didn't get me anywhere. Waited several minutes more and then forced power down.
Rebooted. Disk consistency check found no errors. Logged in. Tried launching email. Same freeze. Powered off.
Rebooted into Safe Mode with Networking. Everything works! No data loss. I could launch whatever I wanted and use the machine just fine. Weird. I shut down.
Rebooted normally and logged in. Freeze again after trying to open the start menu. Forced power off.
Rebooted back into Safe Mode and did a System Restore to three nights ago. Rebooted normally and got a message that the restore was successful. However, I tried opening a document and got stalled/frozen/no response again.
I just have my emergency recovery discs that I created when I bought the laptop. I don't have a Vista disc. I'm not sure if that's because I didn't get one or I've lost it, but I'll hunt around again tonight after work.
However, booting from the recovery disks offers me a few options, including resetting to factory default. That would be a drag, but would it at least fix my problem?
What would you advise my next steps to be?
Thanks for your time!
