Hello everyone..I am having a major problem. After I installed SP2 from
the windows update site, I ran a virus program AVAST! which informed me that
I had 5 virus' and that they were mostly Trojans, but that something was
deeply inbedded in my System Restore files causing me not to get rid of them
when I tried to restore my computer. Then could not get on the net, so I
uninstalled SP2, thinking that was the issue. Then (Oh brother), I installed
SP2 again after I found a CD at Circuit City. Worked fine till two weeks
later. Computer blue screened with, could not load Windows along with "error
c0000218 file corrupt", yada yada yada, (you know the rest IM sure).

Used another computer to get the directions to fix that problem, (SO
HELPFUL-Thank you!), and used the recovery console as directed. It worked to
start windows XP and log in to my desktop. I re-installed SP2 AGAIN thinking
everything would be fixed and new files would override the old corrupt files.
(HA!) This did not work obviously. The problem NOW is, almost all programs
will NOT run, on its own OR when I log on as administrator. I get the error
message, "c:\WINDOWS\system32\RUNDLL32.exe Application not found", and
unfortunately that errorincludes the inability to use all my important
Control Panel commands, like Add/Remove, Windows Firewall, User Accounts,
Display etc.

I can get on the net however, as you can see, and I do have high speed
cable. Did a Belarc profile of my computer and it lists almost all the
hotfixes that were previously installed, as needing to be re-installed.
Windows Update won't let me get that far to do any updates needed as it
freezes forever on, "Searching for current version...". I have thought about
doing a clean install of Windows Xp all over again, but I have 28Gig of music
and pictures/home videos and documents that I do not want to lose. My CD
writer nor Windows Media Player will not burn any of this onto CD. (Same
error message). Is not there ANY other way of fixing the RUNDLL.exe so I can
access the windows update, so I can then get my hotfixes, so this computer is
operatable again to full capacity WITHOUT wiping out my whole HARDDRIVE and
re-installing XP Home again? Doing all this somehow wiped out my SYSTEM
RESTORE also.

I have no other way to back up and I fear that someone here is going to
tell me that I have to buy a portable harddrive, just to save all this. Oh
BTW, I have a Compaq 1.33GHZ 768MB RAM, 60GIG HD Windows XP Home (upgraded
from ME). If you need any other information about my computer to help me, let
me know!

Hello everyone! I made my post here and although I still have some
problems, I have helped my own situation to a point. I checked out the
external Harddrive backups and at 100 dollars or more, instead, I decided to
partition off my main harddrive C:\ NTFS format, and created an F:\ FAT32
partition. (I was winging it-I know nothing about doing any of it so don't
laugh! LOL). I then installed a clean copy of XP on the now drive F:\.
Unbelievable that it worked. I then re-installed the programs I need most on
that drive.

One problem though..well actually two...I need to get to
windowsupdate.com badly, and for some reason, XP will not install a internet
connection in my new drive f:\. So getting on the net is impossible on that
computer since I cannot get logged on to my C: drive where the internet
connection is installed properly. Any suggestions? I really need to get to
updates so I can get .Net, SP2, (I wonder if I should even do that again) XP
hotfixes and security patches. Then there is the other question. I need to
save my music and picture files. Unfortunately they together, are 25GB.
Windows wants to keep installing a new clean copy of windows on that drive
c:\....and won't let me load up windows in the C:\ drive, it just lets me use
the files. not from the actual drive c:\. Anyone know if I can make ANOTHER
partition from my C:\ drive (..and how do I make sure it is going to cover
all 25GB)? I mostly need to get online in my new drive though, any ideas?

Anything you could help me with would be greatly appreciated!
Respectfully Yours,
Carey
