This almost sounds like a virus or malware. Can you try these same things
in Safe Mode? Here's how:
1. Restart your Windows XP machine
2. As the machine reboots and starts back up, immediately start pressing F8
every 1/2 second or so until you get a menu that includes "Safe Mode"
3. Select Safe Mode with Networking
4. Continue with bootup.
5. See now if you can use the Start button
6. Try to open the Control Panel
7. Try to open "My Computer."
After you obtain the answers to all of those last 3 procedures, reply to
this posting and let us know what you discovered.
