Try running System File Checker without the Vista DVD. The DVD would be of
no use, really, and it may be causing it not to complete its scan. The files it verifies against (or cross-checks with) are under C:\Windows\WinSxS\. Under C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-audio-dsound.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_e n-us_59c3aa5060640f47, dsound.dll.mui is the only file in that folder. You can check if this is the case on your computer. I'm not sure the entry in your log is cause for concern. To determine which files could not be repaired by the System File Checker tool, more easily, after a scan, see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833 "William Beard" <> wrote in message news BDFEDE0-7EF0-4D5F-BEDD-...>I am running Windows Vista Home Premium (build 6000). > > In attempting to run the ...sfc /scannow... command from the Adminstrator: > Command Prompt (with the Vista DVD in the drive), the command starts, then > stops at 8% complete, then breaks out saying... > "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation". > > Upon checking the CBS log, I find this... > > ================================================== ================================================== > > CBS.log extract... > > 2007-05-08 13:08:34, Info CSI 0000001a [SR] Verifying > 100 (0x00000064) components > 2007-05-08 13:08:34, Info CSI 0000001b [SR] Beginning > Verify and Repair transaction > 2007-05-08 13:08:35, Error CSI 0000001c (F) > STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND #313288# from > Windows::Rtl::SystemImplementation: irectFileSyst emProvider::SysCreateFile(flags> = (AllowSharingViolation), handle = {provider=NULL, handle=0}, da = > (STANDARD_RIGHTS_READ|FILE_READ_ATTRIBUTES), oa = > @0x58e57c->OBJECT_ATTRIBUTES {s:24; rd:NULL; > on:[121]"\??\C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-audio-dsound.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_e n-us_59c3aa5060640f47"; > a OBJ_CASE_INSENSITIVE)}, iosb = @0x58e59c, as = (null), fa = 0, sa => (FILE_SHARE_READ|FILE_SHARE_WRITE|FILE_SHARE_DELET E), cd = FILE_OPEN, co = > 0x00004000, eab = NULL, eal = 0, disp = Invalid) > > 2007-05-08 13:08:35, Error CSI > 0000001d@2007/5/8:04:08:35.609 (F) > d:\vistartm\base\wcp\sil\merged\ntu\ntsystem.cpp(1 461): Error > STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND originated in function > Windows::Rtl::SystemImplementation: irectFileSyst emProvider::SysCreateFile> expression: (null) > [gle=0x80004005] > 2007-05-08 13:08:44, Error CSI 0000001e (F) > STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND #313287# from > Windows::Rtl::SystemImplementation::CDirectory::Op enExistingDirectory(...) > 2007-05-08 13:08:44, Error CSI 0000001f (F) > STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND #313286# from > Windows::Rtl::SystemImplementation::CDirectory_IRt lDirectoryTearoff::OpenExistingDirectory(flags > = 0, da = (SYNCHRONIZE), oa = @0x58e950->SIL_OBJECT_ATTRIBUTES {s:20; > on:"x86_microsoft-windows-audio-dsound.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_e n-us_59c3aa5060640f47"; > a OBJ_CASE_INSENSITIVE)}, sa => (FILE_SHARE_READ|FILE_SHARE_WRITE|FILE_SHARE_DELET E), oo = > (FILE_DIRECTORY_FILE|FILE_SYNCHRONOUS_IO_NONALERT| FILE_OPEN_FOR_BACKUP_INTENT), > dir = NULL, disp = (null)) > > ================================================== ================================================== > > If I'm reading the above extract correctly, the file... > C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-audio-dsound.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_e n-us_59c3aa5060640f47 > is missing and the file... > d:\vistartm\base\wcp\sil\merged\ntu\ntsystem.cpp > is not present in the Vista DVD. > Upon manually checking the DVD, there is no vistartm folder. > > rtm seems to mean "Released To Manufacturer". Thanks for the feedback,but not go. It still breaks out at 8% and logs the
same data. The referenced folder is NOT in the C:\Windows\winsxs\ folder, therefore the dsound.dll.mui file is also missing. I do have a copy of dsound.dll as a result of installing a Windows 95 program called Spycraft, but it's not in the Windows folders, and there are no other dsound.dll file. Even if I obtained a copy of the dsound.dll.mui file, Vista won't let me create the folder in the C:\Windows\winsxs\. Why won't sfc /scannow work? It's still looking to the CD/DVD Drive for a file. I know about http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833. That's how I learned about the CBS.log. Since sfc can't complete it's run, it won't create the sfcdetails.txt file. I have find the info about the missing file the old fashioned way. I did a Microsoft.com search for dsound.dll.mui and came up empty. Now that scares me. If this file is missing, what else is missing. Maybe something more important. I would be nice, if sfc had completed it's run and recorded ALL the "errors". Any other suggestions most welcome....H E L P ! "dean-dean" <dean-> wrote in message news:... > Try running System File Checker without the Vista DVD. Here are my locations for dsound.* : C:\Windows\System32\dsound.dll C:\Windows\System32\en-US\dsound.dll.mui C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-audio-dsound.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_e n-us_59c3aa5060640f47\dsound.dll.mui C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-audio-dsound_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_5664fc 5c44f7ce2c\dsound.dll Dsound.dll, in System32, is for DirectSound, and should be version 6.0.6000.16386. Date modified should be 11/2/2006. If you were to run DirectX Diagnostic Tool, does it report any proplems? (Type dxdiag in the Start Menu's Start Search box, and click on the result). Try this command, to see if SFC can complete: SFC /VERIFYONLY This command will have SFC scan all protected system files, but not attempt to repair files. Or, to verify (but not repair) dsound.dll only (for example), type: sfc /VERIFYFILE=c:\windows\system32\dsound.dll or, for dsound.dll.mui: sfc /VERIFYFILE=c:\Windows\System32\en-US\dsound.dll.mui "William Beard" <> wrote in message news:C01DD29B-E2F0-402C-BD27-... > Thanks for the feedback,but not go. I hate this Vista new search engine. I can make it find squat.
I did, manually, find c:\windows\system32\dsound.dll thanks to your guidance. The version of c:\windows\system32\dsound.dll matched your data specs. I, also, found a dsound.ddl.mui file at c:\windows\system32\en-US. Not where sfc is looking! Remember, this is new to me. I am learning from your replies. So, thanks for the training! 1. Now, one of my mistakes, I think, was not using capitol letters. I'm learning... 2. What is a POQ? 3. Each time I run sfc /SCANNOW, it goes from POQ0 to Various POQs. One time it when to POQ14, the next to POQ4, the next POQ9. It seem to begin a "Beginning Verify and Repair transaction" phase and breaks out when trying to access... C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-audio-dsound.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_e n-us_59c3aa5060640f47 I have manually checked. It is NOT there. There is a C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-audio-dmusic... There is a C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-audio-mmecore.... No audio-dsound. I tried to create the directory, but Vista won't let me. If you now how to get me the write permission, I could make the folder and copy the file into it, then see if it is the only thing that's apparently misplaced. The DirectX Diagnostic Tool ran well and showed no problems. I have included an extract from the end of the sfc /SCANNOW run. Secondly, I have included the complete sfc /VERIFYONLY run. As you can see, VERIFYONLY also repairs. Don't ask me. I just work here. Haha. Now, I think I have covered everything. Where do we go from here. I do wish to make sfc work 100%. Again, thank you for the guidance. ================================================== ================================================== ==== sfc /SCANONLY extract... Sorry, Mary. But, we are way past that. Besides, if you read the first
message the second line, I think, you will see "In attempting to run the ....sfc /scannow... command from the Adminstrator: Command Prompt". You can't get the Adminstrator: Command Prompt without logging in as Administrator. Hello William,
Can you send me the entire CBS.log file? Zip it up before you send it please Remove the online from email name and email it to me. POQ is pending operations queue You don't have permisions to the winsxs folder to create a new folder which is why you are getting that access denied message. To try to answer your questions...
1. Capital letters don't matter (just that you shouldn't post with all capitals, from what I hear ![]() Note: To see the commands available to System File Checker, type sfc /? 2.I don't know what POQ means, but it's apparently some kind of place marker in the scan. The SFC.exe program verifies files in groups of 100. Therefore, there will be many groups of SFC.exe program entries, always marked with [SR]. Note: Although a log file entry can state that the SFC.exe program is repairing the changed file, no actual repair operation occurs when a file is verified. Note: All of this is just SFC chatter found in all logs, including scans where no problems are found: 0: Move File: Source = [l:192{96}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\Temp\PendingRenames\d8827c4bd2 91c701000200006007b809._0000000000000000.cdf-ms", Destination = [l:104{52}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\_0000000000000000 .cdf-ms" 1: Move File: Source = [l:162{81}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\Temp\PendingRenames\8c47814bd2 91c701010200006007b809.$$.cdf-ms", Destination = [l:74{37}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\$$.cdf-ms" 2: Move File: Source = [l:216{108}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\Temp\PendingRenames\f4d08a4bd2 91c701020200006007b809.$$_resources_fbee56ab048ab2 39.cdf-ms", Destination = [l:128{64}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\$$_resources_fbee56ab 048ab239.cdf-ms" 3: Move File: Source = [l:230{115}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\Temp\PendingRenames\4e338d4bd2 91c701030200006007b809.$$_resources_themes_4d0d491 0e83c2273.cdf-ms", Destination = [l:142{71}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\$$_resources_themes_4 d0d4910e83c2273.cdf-ms" 4: Move File: Source = [l:240{120}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\Temp\PendingRenames\a8958f4bd2 91c701040200006007b809.$$_resources_themes_aero_3f d78bf4cb5fa2c4.cdf-ms", Destination = [l:152{76}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\$$_resources_themes_a ero_3fd78bf4cb5fa2c4.cdf-ms" 5: Move File: Source = [l:252{126}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\Temp\PendingRenames\a8958f4bd2 91c701050200006007b809.$$_resources_themes_aero_sh ell_a91dfa5124b343c4.cdf-ms", Destination = [l:164{82}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\$$_resources_themes_a ero_shell_a91dfa5124b343c4.cdf-ms" 6: Move File: Source = [l:276{138}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\Temp\PendingRenames\02f8914bd2 91c701060200006007b809.$$_resources_themes_aero_sh ell_normalcolor_10be8ec981b35fb6.cdf-ms", Destination = [l:188{94}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\$$_resources_themes_a ero_shell_normalcolor_10be8ec981b35fb6.cdf-ms" 7: Move File: Source = [l:234{117}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\Temp\PendingRenames\48bbb54bd2 91c701070200006007b809.$$_help_windows_en-us_b594929e73669c5e.cdf-ms", Destination = [l:146{73}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\$$_help_windows_e n-us_b 2007-05-08 19:38:02, Info CSI 594929e73669c5e.cdf-ms" 8: Move File: Source = [l:228{114}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\Temp\PendingRenames\a21db84bd2 91c701080200006007b809.$$_help_help_en-us_91e6e7979a9bf9c6.cdf-ms", Destination = [l:140{70}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\$$_help_help_en-us_91e6e7979a9bf9c6.cdf-ms" 9: Move File: Source = [l:214{107}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\Temp\PendingRenames\f607e34bd2 91c701090200006007b809.$$_apppatch_1143992cbbbebca b.cdf-ms", Destination = [l:126{63}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\$$_apppatch_1143992cb bbebcab.cdf-ms" 10: Move File: Source = [l:214{107}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\Temp\PendingRenames\7467234cd2 91c7010a0200006007b809.$$_schcache_f995a5d4decb8cc 0.cdf-ms", Destination = [l:126{63}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\$$_schcache_f995a5d4d ecb8cc0.cdf-ms" 11: Move File: Source = [l:212{106}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\Temp\PendingRenames\ba2a474cd2 91c7010b0200006007b809.$$_msagent_be90584645cb9b95 .cdf-ms", Destination = [l:124{62}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\$$_msagent_be90584645 cb9b95.cdf-ms" 12: Move File: Source = [l:214{107}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\Temp\PendingRenames\5a506d4cd2 91c7010c0200006007b809.$$_system32_21f9a9c4a2f8b51 4.cdf-ms", Destination = [l:126{63}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\$$_system32_21f9a9c4a 2f8b514.cdf-ms" 13: Move File: Source = [l:242{121}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\Temp\PendingRenames\2a63804cd2 91c7010d0200006007b809.$$_system32_manifeststore_7 d35b12f9be4c20e.cdf-ms", Destination = [l:154{77}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\$$_system32_manifests tore_7d35b12f9be4c20e.cdf-ms" 14: Move File: Source = [l:224{112}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\Temp\PendingRenames\5c87c54cd2 91c7010e0200006007b809.$$_msagent_chars_9a5bcb5da3 92f588.cdf-ms", Destination = [l:136{68}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\$$_msagent_chars_9a5b cb5da392f588.cdf-ms" 3. Your POQ ordering observation is interesting. My POQ's go from 0 to 56 sequentially, in a scan where no problems are found. Another Note: If your cbs.log is becoming gigantic, you can delete it, or rename or move it, and SFC will create a new one automatically. It might make it easier to open and glance at. (To add to the confusion, the cbs.log is also shared with the Windows Modules Installer service, which installs optional features, updates, and service packs. So keep you eye on the [SR] tag.) I still can't figure out why SFC is choking on the fact that it can't find x86_microsoft-windows-audio-dsound.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_e n-us_59c3aa5060640f47, and I'm still pondering d:\vistartm\base\wcp\sil\merged\ntu\ntsystem.cpp(1 461)): Error STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND. Well, don't delete cbs.log until you've zipped Darrell a copy
![]() I didn't see his post until after mine was sent (my log was over 22MB's, before I had even run an SFC scan, and Notepad was getting nervous). I'm curious to find out what MS might see... >>I hate this Vista new search engine. I can make it find squat. I don't have much patience with Search. (Two of the columns, or either, "Product version" and "File version", which I find very time-saving, are not add-able in Search, for some reason, as they were in XP's search function). I use a program called Locate. "dean-dean" <dean-> wrote in message news:%23F$... > To try to answer your questions... > > 1.
