Is there any viable workaround or solution to my SP2 crash and reboot
problems during the install process(see below)? Or do I need to wipe
my drive and do a completely clean install of XP Pro and add all the
updates including SP1 and SP2 again? (If you want to respond
directly, you can also e-mail me at
if
you have any advice or suggestions.)
While I was attempting many times to install SP2 (both from updates as
well as the complete downloaded SP2 file), I got this error report
which indicated in a Microsoft Online Crash Analysis that the error
occurred in "CD Recording Engine" created by Simpli Software, Inc.
Here is the Error Signature:
Error Signature:
BCCode : 51 BCP1 : 00000004 BCP2 : 00000001 BCP3 :
E36EAD40
BCP4 : 003533E0 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 1_0 Product : 256_1
These file included in error report
C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini091704-02.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFER~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER1.tmp.dir00\ sysdata.xml
Based on this I went to Simpli Software and found some info about
either upgrading its CD Recording Engine driver or disabling or
removing the driver, all of which I did at different times in my many
efforts to make the SP2 install work.
I also tried to do the SP2 install after uninstalling my CD Recording
programs: Nero Express and Realplayer both of which have CD
Recording/Burning capabilities.
After all of that, I still had no success; the install still crashed
at the same point in the process noted above. And no success with the
file (266 mb) downloaded from the Network SP2 download site. Same
result (and I made sure to remove all contents of the Datastore and
Download folders).
Even worse, after uninstalling the CD Recording programs, deleting the
alleged malfeasant driver from Simpli Software, not only did the crash
continue to occur during install at the same place in the phases, I
achieved another low point in that my computer started rebooting on
its own repeatedly whenever I did a normal startup and tried to click
on any icon on the desktop. Thankfully, I have backups of my computer
and restored it to its SP1 state before I tried the SP2 download and
install.
