Can someone tell me how to turn off auto play in XP.

I've gone to System>Device Manager>CD Rom, but no place
to disable the auto play.

Since installing SP2 the auto play box with flashlight
keeps popping up approx. every 5 sec. It goes off to
fast to kit cancel.

IT IS

I have the value in 3d set to 1. In step 3f I made a value of 0xff
(255) to maximally shut down the autorun for non-music CDs.

That is a bit-mapped value where 0 enables something and a 1
disables.

I wonder if you have a hardware sensor on your CD drive that is
noisy.

Thank you for the help. Hanven't tried it yet though.
I'm following your earlier advise. I downloaded the 2
Anti Spyware programs you told me about. The 1st
detected 9 and I guess cleaned them up. I started
running the 2nd and whatever is in my computer is going
nuts. Now I have the Autoplay popping up 3 and 4 at a
time every couple of seconds. Still waiting on the 2nd
to finish scanning. Spyware should be illegal!!!!!!
Hopefully this will fix it. If not I'll try your second
suggestion.

Do you work for Microsoft?

Was that me? Some things that Adaware and Spybot find are not true
spyware. Yet letting them delete the things they are concerned about
are generally not things you will miss. Their defaults seem to work
well.

Try this basic step:
Open My Computer. Select the CD drive you want to control and
right click. Select Properties. Select the Autoplay tab. You can
then create different rules for different content type.

If you turnoff the Autorun feature as I suggested, then the
autorun.inf file on the CD is not executed.

So that would be Mixed Content for install disks?

I have them all turned off with a command to prompt me what to
do. S/W Application disks do not run automatically on my
computer. I have to assume it is the mixed content type that
implements the action.
