help! updates fail to install

I have the following problem. Any updates that i try to install (either via
automatic updates or from manual downloads) fail to install. The error given
is as follows:

installation status: Failed
Error Code: 80073712

This error occurs with any number of updates including the following
KB932246
KB929399

the last successful update was KB929735 on march 4th

I also have the following sympton: when I try to access the 'Turn Windows
features on or off' from the 'Programs and Features' panel, the window pops
up but it never gets populated. I should note that these two symptoms
(inability to install updates as well as inaccesibility to the 'turn features
on/off' panel) is described in the following document:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/KB931712

The suggested solution is to delete a registry value via the following
command:

reg delete HKLM\COMPONENTS /v StoreDirty

This solution, however, does not work because there is no such registry
value. Various other suggested solutions (such as to delete the
SoftwareDistribution directory) have been equally useless.

Please help!

Hi, I've just started getting the error number too & I've tried that cmd:
....StoreDirty & get "access denied"!. Wow! My very own pc & I am denied???

I've read most of the answers on this problem, but no-one seems to have the
right answer. I have Vista 32bit & no problems until this. If anyone has the
answer, everyone will be grateful!

You need to run CMD.exe under admin to not be denied, but don't bother. The
KB article you read will not work. Short of a reload, I haven't found a
solution. It's weird there's not been any fix yet. It's a very serious bug.

Thanks for your reply. I've been trying to rename the software folder as
other people have advised, and yes, I get denied that too. I've checked my
folders & they all say I've got access to them, but I cannot get it to change
that! Never mind the updates! I'm starting to feel angry with Vista...

Hello,
I am also joining your group of "what the heck do we do next", I had a list
of 15 updates that wouldnt install (kept failing) so I re installed vista
(bit 32) on top of its self (I didnt remove it before I ran install again) as
it does not have a repair like xp it went to installation and that then led
to crutial updats and that allowed me to install all of the 15 updates I was
stuck on but now I am stuck on this error: 80072EFD nothing helps me and you
all talk the talk that I cant understand. I need simplified instructions if
anyone can help

OK!

As I am sure you have gathered I am no expert (shock, horror), well i was
untill vista shattered all my hopes of that........LOL. anyway what I did
(unsure if it was wise or not), was put the disk in and clicked install (even
though it is already installed) then I followed usual prompts key etc. It
then came to a part that asked if I wanted to install critical updates I
chose to do this. NO IT DID NOT DELET ANY existing files, docs etc. It did
however install all the updates I was having trouble getting. but, and thats
a big but, now I am stuck on Windows Update error 80072efd. which is really
doing my head in. I dont want to have to re in stall every bloody time I come
across an update cause surely that cant be good........ I have done what you
said and as the help screen had pointed that out but what a loud of hog wash
as it is already in there. SO I cant say what I did was correct but it was a
temp' fix
