The new updates downloaded today and nothing is working - can't access the
net correctly and most sites will not come up. What the heck is going on???
This is atrocious.

Were going to need a little more information than that. Is something
specifically not working correctly? If so what? Can you load any pages on
the internet? Ect?

Check your security settings and your firewall settings. Do you have NIS
installed by any chance

I may have to apologize here.. as this may be an internet thing and not an
issue with Microsoft - I just don't know yet. All I know is something is
screwy since I downloaded the updates.
I have XP pro and I just downloaded the new updates. I dont know what NIS is
- if that is Norton - yes I have Norton. I can access two internet sites with
ease - everything else comes up Page Cannot Be Displayed, including my
homepage. I followed the instructions on that page to see if it would help
and it didn't (tools, internet options, etc).
My outlook express works fine.
Is this a wide-spread broadband issue? If so, I sincerely apologize for
getting so riled up and venting.
Does anyone know?

My computer was also having issues downloading most webpages after I
downloaded the 6 updates from Windows Update yesterday afternoon (April 12).
However, 4 of the 6 updates were listed in the Add/Remove Programs. I
currently have deleted the following updates and my computer is back to
running normally: KB890859, KB890923, KB893066, and KB893086. Though I found
Microsoft Windows INstaller 3.1 KB893803 on my computer, it would not allow
me to remove it. I have Norton products on my computer as well: Systemworks
2005, Antivirus 2005, and Firewall 2005. I have Windows XP Home Edition with
Service Pack 2. This is the first time I've had trouble with Windows Updates.
I also had issues with the new MSN Messenger 7.0, and originally thought that
was the cause of my headaches. I removed that first, but it made no change.
But the 4 updates I mentioned earlier apparently has temporarily put my
computer back to "normal".

I hope Microsoft can find what the issue is.

I just did a restore back to a time before I did the updates and now I can
get on the web. I'm running xp home sp2 also. What was funny I did the
updates last night and this morning everything was working. Then to night
things started acting up. First I couldn't go to some pages then it would
get to the point I couldn't get to any page. Now after the restore xp now
has updates ready to install Ha! I think I'll wait till the problem is
solved. It has to be one of the updates.

John K is right. My computer seemed fine for awhile as well, but it kept
getting slower--only downloading portions of websites and then saying "done".
Finally it stopped downloading webpages all together. The Windows Update
website is about the only website my computer would allow me to download.

I have turned off my Automatic Windows Updates since it wanted me to
download the 4 updates I deleted earlier.

I just let it install the installer 3.1 and the KB890923 update. I left the
others waiting. I'll see if it starts acting up, probally tomorrow. So far
it's working fine. But it did that yesterday too. If I don't hav any
problems then we know it's one of the others. Then I guess it's loading one
at a time till we know which one.

Thanks for your input here. If anything, I am relieved to know I am not alone
in this. What provider is everyone using? Broadband? I read on another forum
that Comcast, my provider, is having problems. And everyone seems to be
describing the same symptoms as the ones we are describing - as well as the
latest updates rocking them off the net.
My computer seems to be working fine now. I am in a wait and see mode now.

I downloaded these same updates on my Windows XP Home SP1 and it
slowed my machine to a crawl! Now when I try to open the drive list
from a file dialog, or even browse in Windows Explorer, it takes about
15 seconds or more to finally display the list. The same with
pressing CTRL-O and entering a web address in IE6. It freezes the
dialog for awhile before opening the site I entered...

I did a system restore to a point before the updates and the speed
issue has not improved.

Directly before installing all these security updates, it was
operating snappily. Even pressing the "source" button in PowerDVD now
takes 30 seconds for the source options to come up....it was immediate
before!

I also noticed that my CPU resources started peaking around 60% from
time to time and saw that it was my PestPatrol software, which was
behaving nicely with low CPU usage before the updates.

I have stayed away from SP2 because of all the problems, but it
appears these updates have cause their own share...sigh.
