HELP!! Upgraded from xp home to xp pro.. updates do not work!

I upgraded yesterday from windows xp home to xp pro and now my windows
automatic updates will not install. It say's "some updates were not
installed". It says I need "installer 3.1" but it will no let me download it.
I have tried all day to fix this with no luck! I can go to Microsoft and
install the one's it says I need... except for the 3.1, but that is such a
pain! Any suggestions on how to fix this? PLEASE HELP!!!! Thanks, Lu

IF it's an *installation* issue and NO updates will install, please see:

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from
Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a
Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

IGNORE the title and try both Methods in the order presented.

IF this is a *download* issue, then go to Start > Run > type in or copy
and paste the below into the Open: line and then click OK or press Enter

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

The WindowsUpdate.log will now be open.
Scroll all the way down to the bottom for the most recent entries.
Copy and paste the last 50 or so lines into your reply, please.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

My pc goes through the boot up cycle but then crashes back to a blue or black
screen repeatedly. Even with the system restore disc it gets to the MSDOS
screen allowing me to chose enter, repair or exit, and any one will again
crash back to a blue screen.

I think I know the problem is a driver or missing DLL but I cannot get to
the software to change it with the pc not starting properly.

Can anyone help?
