Last night I used Internet Explorer/Tools/WIndows Update to try to
apply critical updates to this machine. I do this regularly, about
once a week. This is the first time it's screwed up.

Windows Update identified 15MB of updates and proceed to load them,
but has not fininshed, after running all night. RIght now the Update
pop-up titled "windows Upadte -- Web page Dialog" tells me:

download progress 15.9MB/15.9MB
Install progress bar is 100%
The cancel button is grey.

What state am I in ?

I have to admit that I left my Zone Alarm and AV software running. I
do that all the time, at least on my own machines. Other than MSIE
there were no MS applications running.

Can I kill the MSIE process and then try to reapply critical updates ?

At soem point I'll just reboot and see what happens. I've got backups,
but using them will be a PITA.

Thanks

When you reboot, do it to Safe Mode and see if the updates finish
the installation. Doubt it was AVG causing the hang, more like one
of the updates, probably the Cumulative Security Update for Internet
Explorer (834707), though that's just a guess.
