Help: web browsing very slow after windowsupdate

Hello,

I have found sereval posts indicaing the same sypmtoms, but cannot find
an explanation or solution. If you have one I would very much
appreciate a response since I am reluctant to reinstall XP again and
not be able to run windowsupdate for fear of breaking the box again.

Symptoms:

Having installed XP from scratch and firefox, I ran windows update. It
downloaded and installed a series of hotfixes, listed below. After
rebooting, web browsing through both IE and firefox is very slow. Many
pages time out, including www.windowsupdate itself.

Google remains fast, but when clicking on links from google, the page
is *very slow* to load. It is noticeably faster to type the URL
directly into the address bar. Images seem particularly slow. I have
tested on unvisited pages in order to control for cached pages.

Any suggestions appreciated.

My immediate thought is a misconfigured Proxy server - what does Internet
Properties show for this??

Thanks for your response.

For both Firefox and IE, I have tried both "auto-detect proxy
settings", and not specifying any proxy settings (direct connection).

Is this where you mean to look?

Given that both browsers are affected, I am assuming that something has
been broken at the OS level. I just don't know what, or where to look.

Did you apply the Firewall before going to the Internet?? - if not, then
your PC is probably owned by someone else!!

I don't think so. The machine is behind a NATted firewall, ad-aware
says nothing, Symantec says nothing, and I have see the same sequence
of events twice:

run windows update to install hotfixes -> web browsing broken.

Interestingly, sites that do not redirect seem to cause fewer problems.
So if I go to www.ibm.com, the page loads reasonably quickly. However
the browser is left waiting for stats.www.ibm.com.

In google, if I click on the link provided, it often doesn't work.
However, if I copy and paste the link into the address bar, this is
more likely to work. I notice that the links provided by google
redirect via google itself. e.g.

http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=U&sta...e.net/&e=10313

is the link provided for sourceforge. If I click on the hyperlink of
that URL, i time out. If I type https://sourceforge.net into the
address bar, I have no such problem.

Maybe I this would be better in a different group. Any suggestions?

I still don't think this is an updates problem, but rather a configuration
problem.

I, too, am experiencing the exact same problems after downloading and
installing a hotfix. Have been using computers and Windows since 1995, so am
computer literate. If you find out which one of the "fixes" is causing the
slow down and time out, please post....because this is the problem.

Same fix also destroyed one of my web pages containing an embedded Midi.
Prior to the fix, my page had no problems coming up. After the fix, everyone
is getting, page cannot display message....except one friend who has not
download any of the updates for a while...they can bring up my page....this
should tell someone where the problem is.

A shot in the dark... Try this:

Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Internet Options, under "Temporary Internet Files", click
the "Delete Files" button, check the box, "Delete all offline content", "OK". After it
finishes, click the "Settings" button and lower the amount of disk space to use to 10 Meg. Click
"OK", "Apply". That will increase your hard drive space by how much was in that folder. I've
seen it well over a gig. Folders that big are prone to crosslinked files. Clear it weekly, or
sooner, especially if IE starts acting funny. You can automate the process by clicking the
"Advanced" tab, scroll down to "Security", and check the box, "Empty Temporary Internet Files
folder when browser is closed", click "Apply", "OK"
