I am at http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu...t.asp?ln=en-us
The screen says "Checking if your computer has the latest version of windows
updating software for use with the website..."
and it just sits there, forever, no network activity (I'm on broadband
cable)
The system is a HP m270n XP Media Edition
Security level is : default

Whats it need to kick it off?
Thanks
Eric

Possibly you have a firewall or anti-virus or anti-malware that is
obstructing the correct operation of ActiveX controls and/or Windows Update.

Please disable all third-party anti-virus, anti-malware, download
accelerator, firewall (re-enable Windows Firewall if necessary).

If you are running behind a home NAT router, disable all firewall or
anti-ActiveX features in the router.

Try Windows Update again.

You're welcome :-)

I believe that Process Explorer (free download from Sysinternal) will help
you identify the process that is running at 50% CPU
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilitie...sExplorer.html
I have never used this application, so can offer no further advice about it.
Perhaps it would be best to post your question in the
windowsxp.perform_maintain newsgroup

Sorry, I don't use any registry cleaners or repair utilities, so am unable
to make any recommendations. I have found that people who have used various
registry cleaners have had more problems AFTER running the cleaner than they
did prior.

No! Do *not* use any so-called registry cleaner. Ever.
