I have a big problems with Windows Vista. I think the problem started when I
was uninstalling itunes and it was hanging so I restarted it. I then got a
black screen saying Windows failed to load and asking if it should start
normally or in safe mode or even the laft known good configeration.....none
of which work.

I have tried restarting the laptop with the Gateway recovery disk, but it
loads some files then I get a blank screen and that it for over 2 hours.

While trying different options I have come across the blue screen alot. All
I can make out before it restarts is UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME.

Can anyone suggest how I can get Windows to load?!

corrupted filesystem.
use the recovery console and run a chkdsk on that volume... cross your
fingers

if windows load after that, run scandisk

if don't, format and reinstall

If you have a Recovery disk, you get virtually no repair options; just
reinstall.
If you do that, you lose all your Data.
To attempt to save Dats, use Knoppix Live CD, or slave your HD in another
computer.
Ask for more info re that.

To reinstall,, in Bios or Boot Menu, set your DVD(Media) Drive to be 1st in
the Boot Order, insert Vistra Recovery Disk, reboot, follow Manufacturer's
instructions to reinstall.

Thanks for your help. So how would I slave my HD to another computer? Does
that mean taking it out? Might be a problem as its a laptop. I have one
other laptop in the house, but it is a different brand.

Thanks,

Phil

A computer repair shop would have a 2 and 1/2" USB External Hard Drive
Enclosure.
Pull out non-booting HD from laptop, and put in enclosure.
Plug enclosure into other laptop, read Data from other laptop.

Try the way below before the above.

http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

Above is way to get Knoppix Live CD.
Download the ISO file, and make a Bootable CD from it.
Set your Bios to boot from Media Drive, boot with CD, and read your Vista HD.
It uses your RAM and Motherboard, but does not install on your Hard drive
Copy files to Flash Drive, 1st right-clicking, removing read only properties
from Flash Drive.

Below is a very good ISO burner; it is a shell ext.
Right-click on the downloaded, and saved to desktop, ISO file to make an
image of it.

I now have a bigger problem I think. I have put the hard drive in an
enclosure and all that is on the disk is the Rocovery Partition.

ANy chance of getting the data off it? I have phoned Ontrack who are
quoting something like £300!!

Try using the Knoppix Lice CD way to recover your Data.
This was what I suggested to do as the 1st option for you, before pulling
the Drive out.

Remember when using it, everything is a one click option; no double-clicking
to open anything.
