My desktop has recently taken to rejecting my wireless network every time I
switch it off and on again. (the pc not the network).

The PC can see the network, it just can't connect to it. The only way to
remedy the situation is a system restore.

As restore seems to work I tried disabling automatic updates, but I still
get the same problem every time I switch off.

There's nothing wrong with my wireless router as all the other devices in
the house are working fine.

The problem started happening about 6 weeks ago.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Normal shut down route. It doesn't appear to be installing updates as I
switch off!

Please define normal shut down route.
As I understand you you select normal shut down and you get no option or
indication that updates will be installed
Do you have system to automatically install updates?
If you run Win Update before you shutdown will your system give you the
option to install some updates?.

I normally shut down via the start menu and "turn off computer" option.

Updates are not being installed as I shut down.

The problem occurs even when windows automatic updates is disabled.

What updates are not being installed when you shutdown? If they are setting
changes were they made by a user with administrator rights?

Ok, I probably didn't explain myself properly.
The point I was making is that the computer throws off the wireless
connection without any changes or updates being made to the system.

It works fine, I switch it off and then it doesn't work.

I could understand this if the computer installed updates when I switch it
off (as they often do) but in this case there appear to be no changes made to
the system and it suddenly doesn't work every time I switch on!

Oh. the problem is that sometimes when you restart or reboot your
wireless connection does not connect.
What OS with what service pack are you running?

Yes, that's the problem.

I'm running Windows XP MCE 2005 (although control panel says 2002) and it is
on Service pack 3

This is a WAG...

Perhaps there is a new wireless router out in your neighborhood and
your computer is trying to connect to it. There is a setting somewhere
in the wireless setup to prevent this ("Always connect to the favorite"
or some such).

I have Vista, so I'm pretty sure my menus won't be 100% similar. And I
can't find it here anyway :-) But maybe you can find it through help or
browsing in the network controls...

As long as I'm here: the control panel is telling you the version of
Windows XP, which is the base of your MCE system. To see the version of
MCE itself, you need to find it in the MCE menus. Your numbers do look
normal :-)
