Helping a friend with Vista

I'm not a Vista user -- I'm back in XP and will likely stay there for a
while.

A friend came to me for help with a problem, and I'm lost. He has a
Toshiba laptop, about 1 year old, but just out of warranty. He has a
problem: when he logs on to a website through IE, his screen goes blank
(blue screen) and the system re-boots. At re-boot, he chooses between
safe mode and normal, etc., chooses normal, and the system re-boots
again! Then, finally, with another reboot, the desktop comes back.

It doesn't matter which site he tries to log on to. He has a wireless
connection at home. He met me at a restaurant where they have wireless
-- same result.

Is there something else I can check for him? Thanks for any help you
can give us.

Hi Jeff,

Probably a plug-in issue, quite possibly a malicious one. Tell him to click
start and type "internet explorer", one of the menu entries will be to
launch it without addons. Try this mode. If it works, then he needs to
disable the one loading with IE that is causing the problem. This is done
under Tools/Manage Addons.

Just to add to Rick's good advice about disabling IE add-ons, your friend
should also make sure his computer is completely virus/malware-free.

Yes, he's been using Norton to keep the computer clean. I've never much
liked Norton. I'll have him do more to see if this helps. Thanks!

Another note -- this page is just powerful! Lots of good ideas on how
to hunt down and kill the bastards corrupting his machine. Thanks again!

Jeff,

If you hit F8 a lot of time when the pc is rebooting you can choose to stop
with the BLUE SCREEN to find out why the PC is rebooting. That might be
interesting.
