Helping new users with Remote Assistance using Windows Live

Hi,

Both my dad and I have installed Windows Live Messenger 8.5 BETA. We
installed this so that my dad could use the "Remote Assistance" service from
his PC and I could fix up his PC remotely. But everytime he tries to initiate
remote-assistance, he gets an error that indicates that he needs to upgrade
his Windows Live Messenger installation. Both of us are using the same
version downloaded from the same URL and initiated the download at the SAME
TIME so we are absolutely sure that we have the same package on both our
machines. So this error looks very silly...

Are there some other dependencies that need to be taken care on his PC to
get the WLM working with Remote Assistance??

Regards,
Apurva

Greetings Apurva,

Yes. In order to use Remote Assistance on Windows Live Messenger in XP you need Windows
Messenger (not Live) installed also.

You can grab Windows Messenger from here:
http://microsoft.com/downloads/detai...f-9157a3b3d774

After this, Remote Assistance should work fine within Windows Live Messenger.

Jonathan,

Thanks for your help! This did resolve the issue with Windows Live
Messenger's complaint about upgrading to the latest version.

However, now I am running into an issue on my PC. When my dad initiates the
remote-assistance request on Windows Live Messenger on his PC and when I
accept his request on my Messenger window, the "Microsoft Help and Support
Center" crashes on my side.

I keep receiving updates from MS on my WinXP box so I believe I have
everything updated on a fairly regular basis. Is there something that I need
to do on my side?

Regards,
Apurva
