Hibernate is not the default for Vista. The sleep with hybrid hibernate is
what Vista expects desktop users to use.
On a laptop running AC, sleep with hybrid hibernate is also the default.
When running on batteries then hibernate becomes the default.

To change these settings use Power Options, the section you want is Advanced
settings, power buttons and lid.

That said, sleep with hybrid hibernate is probably the correct choice for
most people. What that does is to put computer to sleep AND save the system
to hard disk. If you resume normally then things start up very rapidly
without having to recover from the hard drive. If you lose power (or simply
shut off the computer) while it is in sleep with hybrid hibernate and then
power back on, you get the same result that you would have had from a normal
hibernate, the system resumes from the contents of the hard drive, somewhat
slower but still pretty fast.

This may help you as well. Check in the "Problems" and that you have
your settings set for hibernate.

When I got my new Dell a few weeks back I didn't have Hibernate either but
down loaded one of those gadgets for the sidebar that has the shutdown,
start, and hibernate on it and after clicking on the hibernate button from
then out I have had hibernate on my start menu beside the shutdown, start,
etc. Mite give it a try as it couldn't hurt.
