Any idea why in Vista Home Premium, when I tried to hibernate the machine, it
succeeded (at least appear so to me) but at the very next moment, the PC
automatically resumes. I get he same problem with "sleep" mode too. Thanks

There is a default setting to 'resume on error'. Rightclick the Command
Prompt icon on the Start menu, and click 'run as administrator', then at the
prompt, type :
perfmon /rel

The problems reported there could help you fix the error.

You should also check your BIOS settings for any items that restart the
computer such as USB, keyboard, etc and there are several in the device
manager that resume. Wireless mouse devices have caused this numerous
times.

Thanks Mark.

I am not aware of this feature in Windows and it was good to know about it.
I did as you suggested and got quite a bit of info but they all basically
reported that everything is "ok".

I had also tried to restore my Vista to an earlier point several days back
and found that it could hibernate properly without causing it to go into
automatic resume. Problem is I lost my internet connection.

Thanks for the pointer. Didn't work for this problem. I checked the device
manager and my wireless mouse uses the default Windows driver as I did not
install the driver that came with it. All other devices are as they were when
I could hibernate without automatically resuming. Puzzling.

I did recently uninstall Norton Internet Security and replace it with the
Bitdefender product. But I wonder why that should matter.

Solved: Had same problem. 32-bit Vista Home Premium would immediatel
resume after entering sleep/hibernate. Isolated culprit by selectivel
disabling services using msconfig. It was the DHCP client. Seems ther
is a conflict for the 790i motherboard due to multiple ethernet ports
Resolved problem by moving network connection from MAC1 to MAC0 (ie
moved the ethernet connector to the other connector on the back of th
computer). Found it could also be resolved by disabling one of th
ethernet ports (ie, MAC0 or MAC1) in the bios. Hibernate/sleep wor
fine now. Hope this helps
