Hi! After installing the latest windows updates to my W2K machine, the
hidserv.exe service crashes every time I start my computer. This started
after these updates were installed:

KB917422, KB890830, KB922616, KB921398, KB920958, KB920683, KB920670,
KB917422, KB917008, KB918899, KB921883

As I'm using a wireless Microsoft Keyboard and Mouse with IntelliType/Point,
after hidserv.exe crashes, I'm no longer able to use any of the extra
functionallity provided on the keyboard/mouse.

Any ideas on how to solve this?

I have tried reinstalling both IntelliType and IntelliPoint in hopes of
'fixing' whatever was broken by the updates, but no such luck. Very
frustrating to have this crash every time the computer starts.

Of interest, the crash typically won't occur until I begin moving my mouse
around, yet the mouse does continue to work after this.

hidserv.exe will now start correctly maybe 1 out of every 20 restarts. It's
highly unusual. I can't seem to pinpoint what's different for the odd time it
starts without any problems. Anyone else have any luck with this?

Same started on my computer yesterday. I got rid of it by setting the
startup type of the HID service to manual instead of automatic and then
created a batch file with a single line reading

net start "HID Input Service"

Then I created a shortcut to the batch file and moved that to the
Autostart folder of All Users (used a shortcut to be able to run it
minimized). That way the service gets started later in the boot
process, and in my case that made the difference.

Many thanks for the reply. I tried a variation of this, in that I turn the
service to Manual as well, so that it didn't start during the boot process,
and simply started on my own after everything was finished loading.

Unfortunately it didn't help. However, it did provide some insight into a
possible problem with the mouse. After I start the service manually, it
appears to run OK until I start moving my mouse cursor around, at which point
it crashes. If I only use the keyboard for everything, it continues to run.

Any advice would still be appreciated. So far, I'm simply operating without
my keyboards proper functionality.

another thing that helped: check "Allow service to interact with
desktop" in the HID service properties/logon tab. That way I could even
let it start automatically again. Can anybody shed some light on a
possible downside of that, like a security risk?
