High CPU usage running WLM in Vista: Anyone else?

When running WLM (8.1) under Vista, I'm seeing high CPU usage and a slowdown
in everything else. Is anyone else seeing this? I've Googled, but I don't
see any consistent reports, let alone a solution. I've switched to Trillian
for Microsoft messaging for now. But, the fact that WLM doesn't work
correctly bugs me.

PS I uninstalled version 8.1 and installed version 8. Version 8 does not
exhibit the CPU slowdown problem.

Greetings,

How high are you seeing? On my old Athlon 64 3000+ I'm only seeing 20-40% for Messenger on
typical usage.

50%. And that's when I'm not doing anything at all. The odd thing is that
it's not showing up as activity in WLM 8.1 itself. I was puzzled at first
because the system was clearly taxed, but I didn't see anything sapping the
CPU. When I enabled "Show processes from all users" in Task Manager, a
process named "System" (also owned by SYSTEM) appeared, and it was sucking
down 50% (varying from 40% to 60% at times, but never below 30% once it got
revved up, and constantly at 50% when I'm not doing anything at all). When I
close WLM 8.1, System's CPU usage drops back to around 0%, and the slowdown
in other applications stops.

I removed WLM 8.1 and reinstalled version 8, and the problem went away.

I then removed 8 and reinstalled 8.1, and the problem returned.

I reverted to 8, and the problem went away again.

Clearly... my Core2Duo E6300 doesn't get along well with WLM 8.1.

I am seeing the same issue here with my E6600 Core 2 Duo on Windows Live
Messenger 8.1 (8.1.0178.00). When I start it up and leave it idle it sits at
around 40%-50% at all times with me not using it at all. Also, this morning I
left it running and went away from my computer for around 1.5 hours and when
I came back it was pigging 100%!

It disturbs me that an IM application is doing anything beyond waiting for
messages from the server when I have it minimized. Let alone thrashing the
ever loving **** out of my system! Anyway, I've taken to not using it at all
for the last few weeks but I guess I'll take a peak and see if I can find 8.0
or some other alternative to download somewhere.
