Is there a home button in IE8?

Right click on that bar that holds the tabs (but not on a tab) and, if
"Command Bar" is not ticked, then click on it to select it.

If the "Home" button is not visible in the command bar which should
then appear then again right click as above and select:-

Customise --> Add or remove commands

Look for the "Home" button in the left panel, select it and click on
the "Add->" button to move it to the right panel.

Click "Close"

You might have to resize the command bar to see the button.
