One of our senior group members here is having a problem with his home page.

He changed his ISP from a dialup connection where he had that homepage set
as the default and then he changed over to a different ISP and a broadband
connection but no matter how many times he set IE to his new home page,
applies the change and closes it still reverts to his former home page.

He has upgraded from IE 6 to IE 7 but that problem still remains. He is
using Windows XP SP2.

Has anyone got any thoughts please?

Hi Joe,

What is his homepage set to? The new ISP's homepage by chance? Did the ISP
supply you with software to set up your broadband connection?

Oh, I see from your email address that bigpond may be your ISP... mmm Have
you installed the Sensus toolbar?

Regards.

Hi,
From PA Bear:
[quote]
Options in several third-party applications can disallow such changes. These
include Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, Spybot Tea Timer, SpywareBlaster, SpySweeper,
Ewido, Norton AntiVirus, McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware, and recent
versions of Zone Alarm (Free and Pro).
[end quote]

Also Spybot> Tools> IE Tweaks.

This is fixed in the latest version of Zone Alarm-free.

If you don't wish to dig through settings of whichever security/privacy
programs you have installed, you could startup in Safe Mode, change the
homepage then restart.

Hope this helps,

I'm unable to change my homepage using safe mode because safe mode uses the
16 bit resolution, and all web pages want to use 32 bit mode. Alternatively
I cannot use the "Tools, Options" route because in 16 bit mode, the bottom of
the Options window is not displayed. Therefore, the "Apply" and "OK" command
keys are not displayed.

I have nothing unusual on my computer including special toolbars. I am
using Windows Live OneCare, Windows Defender, Webroot Spy Sweeper and Spyware
Detector. None of them seems to be causing the problem. The webpage on
which I am stuck is "Verizon Yahoo Mail Beta," and Verizon said they do not
support IE 7.

Hi Joe,

Yep the instructions for changing the home page you described are correct.
If the homepage continues to return to intas though it indicates that some
software supplied by intas is still on the machine and continues to reset
the homepage each time IE starts.

First, check Add/Remove Programs (Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add/Remove
Programs) for any programs supplied by intas. If there are uninstall them.

Restart IE and change the homepage setting to about:blank (fastest load) and
then close and restart IE. If the about:blank homepage loads then well and
good. You've fixed it.

Second, Open the Internet Options = Start>Settings>Control Panel>Internet
Options and select the Advanced tab and uncheck "enable third-party browser
helper objects". While you have the Internet Options applet open select the
connections tab and make sure you do not still have "Use dialup connection"
selected. If the intas connection is in the list of available connections
you might as well delete it while you are there. For ADSL connections you
should be using LAN settings and "Never dial a connection" should be
selected and all the "Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings" should
be disabled. Save your changes and restart IE and change the homepage
setting to about:blank and then restart IE to see if the homepage change has
stuck. If it has then that indicates that intas has an add-in loaded that is
changing the homepage each time IE is loaded.

Go back into Internet Options (Tools>Internet Options) and re-enable
Third-party browser helpers. Restart IE and open the Add-In Manager
(Tools>Manage Add-ins) and disable any toolbars or BHOs (Browser Helpers)
that look like they come from intas. Restart IE and test if homepage changes
take effect.

Lastly, Contact intas (inaus.net) and give them a piece of your mind, Ask
them how to remove their browser hijacker and where to send the bill for
your and my time and effort! Please donate my $120 to WildlifeWarriors.com

Regards.

SpySweeper and Spyware Detector (not one of the most-recommended antispyware
tools) are the most likely culprits, Emil.

Also: Did you have OneCare replace Norton AntiVirus?

The solution was in the quote by Mr. Bear, Ad-Watch was the culprit and the
problem has now been resolved.

Many thanks to all who helped with this one, it is appreciated.
