Horriable Vista Experience - Please Help!!!

I'm really hoping someone can help me out. I have a 100% legit copy of Vista
Ultimate. It's the first OS I've paid money for directly, and I did so
because I wanted to have a trouble free OS. But instead, I'm having NOTHING
but problems.

This is a fresh install, on a new partition.

Here's a list of issues I'm having, if anyone could help me fix any or all
of them, I'd really appreciate it.

1.) When I leave my computer for a bit and come back, often times I return
to find that Vista has crashed. I have no idea what caused it; it will
prompt me to check for a solution online - I tell it to check, but it never
does anything.

2.) I can't shut-down or restart. Vista will get to the 'Shutting Down'
screen and just hang - forever. I have to kill the power.

3.) I have a wireless keyboard. I can use it to enter my BIOS menu at boot
- but all things Vista seem to ignore it. To install Vista I had to use a
wired keyboard, but now, everytime Vista crashes (which is very often), I
have to wait 30 seconds at the 'Do you want to boot into safe mode' screen
while it ignores my keystrokes.

4.) I have a LinkSys WUSB300N wireless-N adapter. It has a Vista driver
and seems to work great. However, if I go into Device Manager/Advanced and
change any settings when I hit Okay that window locks up. I have to use Task
Manager to kill it.

I've done the typical 'Download the newest drivers' thing - but I'm fresh
out of ideals on what to do. I hate to say it, but I'm really disappointed
with my Vista Experience. In addition to any help on any of the above
issues; can anyone tell me if I can 'Return' or even trade Vista for a real
copy of XP?

Are you using a screen saver?
Try disabling it to see it causes the mysterious crash.
Set your power settings to Shut down the monitor.

If you can't shutdown that is definitely a driver issue.

What all is in your system?
Are you dual booting this system?
Have you tried removing the Wireless N adapter?
Since the system hangs when you change settings on it, it may be the
culprit.

The default Vista screen Saver comes up after 10 minutes; but I want a screen
saver to come up after 10 minutes.

Is there any way to see what driver/device is preventing me from shutting
down? As far as I know, everything in my box claims to work with Vista.

I'm not dual booting the system.

I have a BFG GeForce 7950 GT Video Card
Linksys Wireless Network Adapter (WUSB300N)
nVidia 590 SLI AMD
Promise Ultra133 TX2 RAID Controller
Sound Blaster Audigy SE

Also, I've just tried to install Java and the install hung/failed. Trying to
install tells me that a Java install is already running.

I was going to run a Virus Scan, but it requires the Java Runtime.

when i did a complete reinstall of vista i had to rerigister and do the code
number..you need to just reinstall the vista.just get it working with the
normal things..then do a mauall restore point..then ad something and if your
computer starts to go nuts..just go back to the restore point.evey time you
install something.wait a good amout of time to make sure it is ok and do
another manual restore point take your time and see how it goes,,

Investigate such things as:

Vista specific drivers for the mobo from it's manufacturer.
Any and all other dirvers for other hardware such as [and especially] the
video card.
Any recent BIOS updates released by the mobo manufacturer [be very careful
about updating the BIOS and follow instructions to a 't'].
Also make sure the computer is not overclocked.

You might also check the hardware that all cards and the RAM are well seated
and that plugs and cords are snuggly plugged in.
Clear the interior of the computer case of dust [careful here - blow, don't
suck].

You might also read up on forums about your particular mobo on the subject
of Vista and so on ..

Man, Vista sure sounds like an efficient operating system to use! If one has
to go through all that bullshit to get to a stable system, Vista doesn't
look to be the o/s to use.

ah, if Vista is stable, just wait until the next update that might trash
your connection to the net, or other anomalies. Vista changes as often
as Pamela Lee changes hubbys. Like a box of chocolates, you never what
you'll get with Vista.

Wheelman's spot on for trouble-shooting or installing ANY OS. Why is it
that people can't start simple, get it stable, then add one thing at a time?
