They can't be saved to a hosts files since their addresses are not fixed.

Did you mean for a wireless network without DHCP ? Please explain the
second query.

The setup is a health care mobile unit using wireless network and does not
have dns numbers configured on the adapters. The host file has sites
configured with the corresponding ips. We would like to include the windows
update ip address in order to configure windows updates.

You would need to enter the URL and allow it access to ports 80 and 443.
That's your only option. See below:

http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/ptr.ch....microsoft.com

http://catalog.update.microsoft.com
http://update.microsoft.com
http://au.download.windowsupdate.com

The former is the new Microsoft Update Catalog where one can manually
download updates by the name of and/or the KB number of; the second is
either the Windows or Microsoft update sites depending upon which the
system is opted in to and may be used by Automatic Updates or by
accessing the sites with Internet Explorer.
The latter is where Automatic Updates obtains updates from.
