Hi Druss,

Are you creating the file or are you editing the existing file with notepad
(which is what you should be doing). Run Notepad with elevated privileges in
order to accomplish this. To do so, right click the notepad shortcut and use
"run as administrator" and agree to the UAC prompt. Then click file/open and
navigate to C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc and switch the file types from
text (*.txt) to 'all files', then select the HOSTS file. Make the required
additional entry or entries, then click file/save before closing notepad.

Thanks for your help Rick! I was having the same problem and it worked like a
charm.

My next question isbe, if I am the administrator over the account, and it
shows that I am the administrator in all of my settings, WHY must I still go
to a specific program and run as administrator? IShouldn't this be allowed
automatically? Is this some new security feature?

Thanks.

Alexia

Hi Alexia,

It is a new security feature. Even admin accounts are required to
specifically invoke elevated privileges in order to make changes to system
files. This is to prevent malware from making changes without the users
knowledge. One problem with XP and other previous versions is that the
majority of users still would run as admin, and a virus could easily use the
account privileges to install on the system.

Because in Windows Vista even the Administrator account runs with normal
user privileges as a security measure.
