Swap out the DVD drive for a CD-only one. Beyond that, you'd need to do what
you're asking not to do, ie: remove DVD playback software.
DMA settings would be found in the properties of the controller cable the
drive is connected to in Device Manager. Set view to "by connection" to
easily locate the proper cable.
