Hotfix installation failure

I got a windows 2003 server hotfix that needs to be installed here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...uct=winsvr2003

When actually attempting to install this hotfix, I get the error:

"Setup could not find the update.inf file needed to update your system"

I have done a good deal of forum trolling and troubleshooting, including but
not limited to all the methods (to no avail) in the following link:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;822798

None of the things I've tried work. I did find this very old post detailing
basically my exact experience with a final response of "well, it looks like
the installer is broken... I'll tell microsoft." This thread can be found
here:

http://www.microsoft.com/communities...=en-us&m=1&p=1

I understand that the particular hotfix I'm working with isn't complete just
yet, so the installer-is-broken is entirely viable. I'm wondering if this is
indeed the case (eg. I can give up and wait for microsoft to fix it... not a
real option in my scenario) or is there an actual fix for this?

Any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated.

Suugest you extract the Hotifx using 7Zip or another decompression tool,
check to see if update.inf is included, and contains it's 'common
sections' :
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro...dte.mspx#E6GBG

If it checks out, move the extracted folder to the root drive and run
update.exe from Start > Run.

The installation issue *might* be related to security software and/or
Group Policy. Or, it may be just as you state, it's 'not ready for
primetime'. <w>
If that's the case, contact the folks at MS from where the update was
obtained and report that it will not install.

There is a updatebr.inf but no update.inf

I'll investigate further.

kbwinserv2003presp1fix

That's a pre sp1 fix. It's baked and in sp1.

It's part of Win2k3 sp1. It's ready for prime time.

If this is the case, why with a Win2k3 sp2 machine could I not install
exchange 2000 system manager because of "incompatibility" issues? If it's in
sp1, I shouldn't have this issue, correct?
