Please help us to help you. What does "will not open" mean? What
happens when you try? If you get an error message, please quote it
verbatim.

For information on how to make a good newsgroup posting, read

en I click on the attachment, I get a window (not an error message) which
asks me if I wish to save or open. I have tried both, but if I click "Open",
it refers me to another window which tells me that it does not have the
software to open and asks if I wish to try to find one online. I press yes
and am referred to Microsoft Windows and it give me a choice of four
downloads. The one relevant one is Microsoft Word Processor (This is the
reference on my Works menu). When I go in, I select Vista updates,
downloaded it, but I then go back to the origonal windows saying the file to
open does not exist and around I go again.

What is the extension (the last three characters after the dot) of the
file you are trying to open? Is it perhaps .doc?

You say "Works." If you have Microsoft Works installed, unless it's
Works *Suite*, you probably don't have Microsoft Word. And if the file
is a .doc file, you need Word or a compatible program to open it.

You can download a free Word viewer here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891090

That will enable you to view, but not modify the file or create your
own .doc files. If you want that ability, you need to buy Word or
WordPerfect. Or download the free OpenOffice.

By the way, you don't say what these files are or where they are
coming from. Be aware that opening such attachments is one of the most
dangerous things you can do. You often see advice not to open
attachments from people you don't know. I think that that's one of the
most dangerous pieces of advice you see around, because it implies
that it's safe to do the opposite--open attachments from friends and
relatives. But many viruses spread by sending themselves to everyone
in the infected party's address book, so attachments received from
friends are perhaps the *most* risky to open.

Even if the attachment legitimately comes from a friend, it can
contain a virus. I'm not suggesting that a friend is likely to send
you a virus on purpose, but if the friend is infected without
realizing it, any attachment he sends you is likely to also be
infected.
