Howdy Need help with update problems

Could anyone help?

Tried updating to the SP2 but got an error message for Error number:
0x8007043C

Would someone have an idea of what to do.

Am trying to help my roommate fix his computer and am running into several
roadblocks.

If you can help that would be great.

Means: ERROR_NOT_SAFEBOOT_SERVICE.
Translation: You need a service which is not available in safe mode
