HP and the hidden partition

I recently purchased a HP M9200t with Vista Premium 64 bit. I would like to
make the hidden recovery partition, visible. I want to keep it, but I also
want to create a folder for updates. Hopefully there is room. How do I
make this partition visible? I remember a registry entry mod, but I can't
find it. And, it should be for 64 bit Vista. Any help?

Hi Chas,

It would not be advisable to mess with the recovery partition. Unless
you have a Vista installation DVD, this is your only way to reinstall
Vista. Instead, you might consider storing the updates on DVD or create
another partition or drive and store them there.

Hope this helps,

There is very little room on a recovery partition and you would lose it
anyway if the hard drive itself went. Follow Brink's suggestion and store
on external media.

Check the documentation - HP provides an utility for copying the recovery
partition to removeable media (DVD) and means to "remove" the partition -
making the space available.

Also HP provides recovery disks via site order for a small fee.

HP (my understanding) shied away from hidden partitions and asssigned
visible drive letters evidently not so in your case.

On my HP I had the choice of making two backup DVDs. So if I mess with the
hidden partition, no big deal.

I just add another HDD.
As cheap as they are, there is no reason to play with the recovery
partition.
I would make the recovery CD/DVDs anyway.
If the HDD fails, you would be SOL with the recovery partition anyway.

Brink,
Thanks for your reply. I have created a 3 dvd set already. There's about
1.5 GB remaining on this partition and I want to keep update info on there
in case I have to restore. When I open the "FACTORY_IMAGE" partition, I see
a "Recovery" folder. Entering this folder, I get:
This area of your hard drive
(or partition) contains files used
for your PC Recovery.
and I cannot go further. But i can add folder and files to the partition.
So I guess I am fine. Just would like to know how to unlock this folder.

AJR,
The partition really isn't hidden. I can access the partition and see a
folder. I can't access the folder. But, since I can create folders in the
root of the partition, I guess that will do. I was just looking to see if I
could open/unlock the "Recovery" folder.

Chas,

The only way to unlock that partition is to Delete it. That would not
be a very good thing to do unless you just do want it as a backup any
more since you have the recovery disks now.
