HP Bluetooth Module USB\Vid_03f0&Pid_171d Installs Repeatedly

A recent update is repeatedly installing itself on my laptop, and
indicating success, however it actually rolls back after the fact, so
Windows Update keeps triggering an update.

The device concerned is the "HP Integrated Module with Bluetooth 2.0
Wireless Technology", device id USB\VID_03F0&PID_171D, service BTWUSB,
driver provider WIDCOMM, 05/11/2006, version 4.0.1.3500.

If I manually select "Update Driver..." in device manager, it downloads
the same update as does Windows Update, installs successfully, and
changes the details to "HP Bluetooth Module", driver provider Broadcom,
10/24/2006, version 5.1.2535.0.

.... for a few seconds, then it rolls back to the original HP driver.

So the problem is not in Windows Update, but in the driver update
itself.

There is a corresponding Warning in the System Log: Source: BTHUSB,
Event ID: 18, Description: Windows cannot store Bluetooth link keys on
the local transceiver because it cannot determine whether proper
security is enabled for the device.

The only help for this error that I have found implies that it is a
benign error on startup that can be ignored.

However, in this case it causes the driver update to fail.

How can this be fixed? I presume the driver update is expected to
succeed, not fail.

Update: This problem did NOT go away while I continued to run Windows
XP MCE 2005. Windows Update continued to update the driver,
successfully according to Windows Update, and the driver rolled itself
back. This happened whenever Windows Update was invoked.

Update 2: This problem DID go away on updating to Windows Vista. The
driver now is called "HP Bluetooth Module", provider Broadcom, date
10/24/2006, version 5.1.2535.0.

All's well that ends well, although not by the expected path.

Hi Peter,

It is best to never download drivers from MS update, download only if realy
needed from the manufacterers website in this case HP. If you know the
chipset on HP hardware it is best to download from that manufacturer in this
case broadcom.

I know it did not help in this case but next time you want to update it
might keep you out of MS update driver trouble as a good working piece of
hardware suddenly not working anymore Remeber: if it ain't broke do not
fix it.

Best regards,
Michel Denie
