hp officejet j4680 update

Every time HP tries to install an update for a hp officejet j4680, Windows
Update gives the error message 80070103 and says the installation failed.
Why???

Don't get hardware updates from Windows Update. Get them from the Vendor's
site (in this case HP....)

HP doesn't use Windows Update to install its updates. If you're referring
to a printer driver update offered to your (WinXP? Vista?) machine by
Windows Update, just "hide" it, then check with HP Support to see if there's
an available update for the J4680.

Why did the installation fail?

Because the driver you are trying to install is already installed or the
driver that you're trying to install is an older driver than the one you have
already.

As others have already advised - drivers should be obtained from the
manufacturer's site rather than from Windows
Update.

pardon my newb question, but I can't see the option to "hide" my updates in
the Windows Update control panel screen. I using 64-bit Vista.

Thats fine figured it out from another post. Its a "RIGHT-CLICK" on the
update itself. How are people supposed to figure that out?

Use the Help?

E.g. Run... control wuaucpl.cpl Then press Enter
(because the keyboard focus is on the link
How does Automatic Updates work?
)

Then in the Search tab enter:
declin* OR hid*

Click on How to...
Click on Stop Windows from notifying you about updates
that you have already decided not to download or
install (hide updates)
