I have a 32 bit Vista OS w/ a HP 6310 all in one printer. We use a router so
both computers can use the printer and internet. My other computer is on XP.
The printer and fax work for both computers but the scanner won't work w/
vista. I get the message that no hp devices detected when I try open the
solution center. I spent 2 hours of work time w/ an online hp tech but no
help there..... Does anyone have a solution??? THANKS!

A little help Maria.
Which computer is the "Office Jet 6310" (you forgot to tell us the model) attached to?
Have you downloaded the Vista Drivers for this printer?

It is a HP OfficeJet 6310 all in one. I bought it last Fall. I installed
the disk for Vista that came with the printer. Hope that answered the
question. I'm not a computer guru.....

The computer is an Emachine that is less than about 2 months old. I didn't
know that the scanner didn't work until I needed it yesterday. The printer
and fax is fine.

Hi Maria.

I don't know if this is right, but regarding to Microsoft, You can't share a
scanner in Windows XP.
I have my scanner connected to the Vista machine and I can't find a way to
reach it from my XP.
My guiess, and it will be, is that You have to have a real cabled network to
make it work.

My computer on XP is working wireless and the scanner works fine with it. My
computer (w/ the Vista) is wired. I have the exact same computer and printer
at work and am having the same problem with both. My bosses computer is
wireless on XP and the scanner is working great on that too. SURELY it has
to be this junk we call VISTA! :-)

But of course it is. Why do think some many people are going back to
XP?

Have you bothered to ask HP if they provide Vista-specific device
drivers for that specific model scanner? If they don't, it's hardly
Vista's fault, now is it?

Normally, input devices cannot be shared, at all, but this isn't
always true of scanners. You'll be able to share the scanner *only* if
it's manufacturer provided specialized software for that purpose.

You have to use a network-capable scanner (which immediately
eliminates most, if not all, USB scanners) and specialized software
(that comes with the scanner) to do this. If you're talking about a
home consumer grade flatbed USB or parallel port scanner, you very
probably can't.

HP, Canon, Xerox, Océ, Kyocera Mita, and other companies
manufacture network capable scanners (They're actually multi-function
devices that also copy, print, and sometimes fax and email) and the
requisite specialized software. The cost of such devices usually
starts somewhere just below $5,000.00 USD.

The HP PrecisionScan Pro application, versions 2.03 and higher,
which normally comes with some of HP's low-end business scanners,
permits some of the scanning functions to be shared. Consult the
documentation that came with the scanner. (I know it works, if not
very well; I've set up HP ScanJet 6300C and 7490C devices to be
shared, using the supplied software.)
