https and windwos update

on my xp pro(asus a8n-vm csm Bios rev 0506 Athlon 64), after discovering
unable to use https, unable to update, try a number of procedure to repair

still failed, tried reinstall over the windows directory, apply sp2 from cd
, apply other device drivers, connect to internet using http ok, ftp gives
connection reset.

Windows Update errors and problems with Automatic Updates

thx, probably will help, but it against the policy here to use software from
vendors/makers not on approved list.
