HUGE download (SP-2?) won't stop - can't use 'net

I have a Dell Inspiron notebook bought in '01 that I've not used for the net
until now. When attempting windows update tools on the browser, it says my
version can't be verified as genuine. I bought it new from Dell and I'll deal
with that problem later.

However, an update downloaded on it's own and installed. Then, another one
started and has been going for three days now. A check of the running
processes indicates that it's a windows update, but no more than that.

Sometimes a round icon shows in the systray and a hover shows the progress -
65% and counting... The download is HUGE and I'm on a dial-up. No more info
is available from this icon and sometimes it's not there at all.

I have tried everything I can think of to stop the download and cannot.
Neither can I monitor it to tell what it is. Also, twice as much data is
being uploaded from my pc than I'm receiving.

I would like to stop the never-ending download. If that's not possible, how
can I see what it is? This download process seems to be a bit too automatic
and not user-friendly at all.

Trying to use the net is impossible as the download is continous as soon as
I open the browser, thus I am using a different pc to post this. This is
driving me nuts!

My email is radeculous(remove this)@yahoo.com. It will take a day or so for
me to read responses or check my email as I'm on a borrowed pc. Any
assistance would be appreciated more than you know.

Thanks and have a nice day.

Start Windows, open Control Panel > Automatic Updates and uncheck the box.
That should stop whatever it is downloading on your system. You can order
the SP2 CD from:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...efault810.mspx

Other updates can be had by downloading or ordering the CD for AutoPatcher:

Remove WU downloads from the temporary folder:-

Stop the Automatic Updates service

Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Delete the contents of the Download folder
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
Click OK.
Open the Download folder.
Delete all contents of the Download folder.
Close the window.

Start the Automatic Updates service
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

By deleting the contents of the Download folder - you have removed any
downloaded updates.

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for the link.

However, unchecking auto update was one of the many things I tried and it
doesn't stop the download.

I also id'd the programs associated with the auto update process and removed
them. The only one that can't be removed is wuauclt.exe.

I can order the CD, but I still can't stop the download.

I expect you have already been hacked by a worm which has taken over your
PC, because you went online to the internet without any of the protection of
all the recent updates. Did you have a firewall?

Windows Update does not cause the disruption you are experiencing, because
it moderates its use of your internet connection.

You need to thoroughly disinfect your PC now.
