Is there anything out there that will permanently save my layout?
I have tried two methods claimed to save/restore the desktop icon layout.
One operates by right clicking 'computer' the other from the recycle bin.
The trouble is that, notwithstanding a change to the registry, the layout
still changes occasionally, usually when switching on the monitor, and the
restore function only restores about 90% of the icons.

This is annoying beyond belief, not to mention time consuming to rectify. I
like and need a fairly densely populated desktop. Is there a foolproof
solution to this? Will Windows 7 be any better, or is this one of the many
simple functions still beyond the capabilities of Microsoft?
regards,
Bill

Mine stay put by simply un-checking 'Auto arrange' and 'Align to grid'
but if you have tried more complicated methods I guess you will have
tried the simple things first. I also turned the mouse drag sensitivity
down a bit to avoid inadvertent nudges though I can no longer remember
how.

Win 7 won't do it, either.

I use UltraMon to span the taskbar across my 2 monitors.
It has a feature that saves/restores Desktop icons position..

A Google search indicates that there seem to be alternatives....
