I think the instructions in the following
article will work for Vista.

(190355) How to Re-create the Show
Desktop Icon on Quick Launch Toolbar
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=190355

If you try it...let me know the result.

I just spent an hour with HP about this very thing!

We tried everything. Here's the only thing that works:

Open Notepad and enter the following text:

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

Save the new file to

C:\Users\(your user name goes here)

as "Show Desktop.scf", (make sure the file name doesn't have the
quotation marks, I only added them to make it clear what the file name
should be), then drag and drop the icon on the
Quick Launch bar or whatever location you want the shortcut to appear.

Don't accidentally delete it again!
(But if you do, it's an easy fix).

Glad I could give something back. Just make sure you don't someday
delete that scf file you created. That's the actual shortcut to the
command, and the shortcut in your taskbar is a shortcut to a shortcut!

Thank you so much for posting this. I've been trying for a couple weeks to
figure out how to get the "show desktop" icon back in the quick launch. It
worked and was very easy to do.

humm i was gonna send you a copy in a file attachement but it seems that the
show desktop isn't a program but a shortcut so i dough it would work on your
system, but i tried and was told that no such support or something like that

Hi JJmeowy,

You might use this instead:

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=shell32.dll,34
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

It will have the correct icon for the shortcut.
