An icon appeared on my desktop named desktop. It says (in notepad):

[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell 32.dll,-21769
IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183

It's properties say Configuration Settings (.ini) opens with Notepad.

Is it okay to delete this off my desktop. I have no idea where it came from.

Thanks.

In Control Panel (Classic view) > Folder Options > View tab, do you have "Show
hidden files and folders" checked?

I certainly do; I want to see what's there. MS needs to find a better place
to store settings like that rather than scattering "desktop.ini" files in
various directories. After turning off all the foofy web crap and setting
windows classic views I just delete them and have never had any problems
because of it.

YMMV

Yes . Show hidden files is checked. I had another problem that Tech Support
helped me fix and we had to show them. So, to delete or hide, that is the
question.

Hi,

You can safely delete it, it just holds information for any customized view
of the actual folder %username%\desktop.

Yes, that is the question. Every one of the folders on your system can be
customized by its own desktop.ini file. Someday you may find a use for
them.

That does not work. The file still appears on the desktop at startup.

Control Panel (Classic view) > Folder Options > View tab > check "Do not show
hidden files and folders", and check "Hide protected operating system files
(Recommended)".
