Under Windows 98 I installed TweakUI and there was an Icon Repair option.
How does one correct errant icons under Vista?
Thanks, DH

You may delete the "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\IconCache.db" hidden file
and then restart the computer.

Hi,
Follow the procedure in this MSKB article to refresh the icon cache.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=926715

Hope this helps,

Daniel, I deleted the file in question, rebooted but the incorrect icons are
still incorrect.

Don, the link you provided did not mention Vista and the steps for me to
follow didn't apply (since the instructions provided were for XP and not
Vista).

Another thing you can try is to run chkdsk C: /F from an elevated command
prompt window (note that C: is the drive where you have Vista installed.
Also note the space between C: and /f). Reboot to allow the utility to
operate. See if the problem has been corrected.

Hi,
OK, slight difference. Right-click desktop, choose Personalize, choose
Display Settings. Change color depth, hit Apply, change color depth back to
original setting, hit Apply. That should refresh the icon cache.

Don thanks for the follow up. I'm not sure what exactly solved my problem,
but the errant icons (copies of the same one) are gone.

I did a manual Scan via McAfee, changed the video set up as you suggested
(and reverted back), I deleted the icon cache, did a CHKDSK or whatever was
suggested here ... and I just now noticed that my problem was solved ...
though I really don'ty know for sire what the solution was.

Thanks to every one here and their suggestions! DH

Sorry what is an errant icon. Why not delete and replace the icon needed?
