Icons don't show up in main message window

I write on behalf of my friend. She cannot receive custom emoticons. when I
send them to her, she just see the code. Some of the custom icons already
stored on her computer show up in messages to me, but not in her window.
Others (like the Tweety icon suite she downloaded through Messenger) she sees
when she chooses it, but after hitting enter, she sees only a blank spot (not
even the code).

She tried reinstalling messenger. She also ensured that the "show custom
emoticons" option was checked.

any thoughts?
