Icons missing in Vista 64 bit

Ok, guys, this can be a tough issue or an easy one, which ever you look
at it. I had to reinstall Vista 64 bit Home Premium and after a couple
of days of installing programs, I noticed a strange problem. I know that
there are two Program Files (one for 32 bit and one for 64 bit).

I noticed that some installed programs have no icons (the regular blank
paper with a fold on the top right). When I drag a program to the
desktop, it creates this default icon but not the regular program icon.
When I tell the short cut to change the icon, it gives me an error
saying: Windows cannot find the file %ProgramFiles%\2K
Games\BioShock\Builds\Release\Bioshock.exe (for Bioshock game in this
example).

When I try to do "Set ProgramFiles", I get the following which is
correct:

ProgramFileC:\Program Files
ProgramFiles(x86)=C:\Program Files (x86)

Any help is much appreciated !!!!!!!!!

Hi,

Change the path from the variable to the hard-coded location of the
installation. As it's a 32-bit program, switch it to:

"C:\ProgramFiles (x86)\2K Games\BioShock\Builds\Release\Bioshock.exe"

including the quotes.

No. I have not. I had done everything that I have searched the internet
I recreated the iconcache.db file, increase the Max Icon Cache size i
the registry but to no avail. Short of backing up my data an
reinstalling Vista 64 sp1, I don't know what else to do! It appears tha
somwhere, the shortcut links get confused with the two different Progra
File path files and point to the wrong ones which is why the icons ar
not showing up properly. Vista 64 is different since their are tw
Program Files directories so things can get confused...

Hello Jonathan and TheCell2007

Have you tried to remove the shortcut arrow recently

It sounds like you may have used the improper XP method to remove th
shortcut arrow causing the default icons in Vista. If this is so, the
you guys can use the program in this tutorial to restore the defaul
shortcut arrow, and safely remove it with the program afterwards

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67...tcut-arrow.htm

Hope this helps
Shaw

Hi Shawn, thanks for your help. Unfortunately, this did not work as
thought because the links in the Start Menu also have the same defaul
"no icon" icon. The icons point to the file which appear in either th
Program Files or Program Files (x86) directories. Even after I installe
MS Office 2007, I get these no icon default icons (instead of th
regular MS Office 2007 icons). I have a suspicion that the environmen
variables are screwed up but who knows.... Whats weird is that my wif
has the same exact computer with Vista 64 and she doesn't have thi
issue

Hi, sorry! But this did not work! Here is an example of what has
happened. I just installed a game, Supreme Commander. The shortcut is
created on the desktop for the game and it has no icons (the default,
not the game icon). I look at the properties and it states that the game
is installed in:

Target: "C:\Program Files (x86)\THQ\Gas Powered Games\Supreme
Commander\bin\SupremeCommander.exe"

Start In: "C:\Program Files (x86)\THQ\Gas Powered Games\Supreme
Commander\bin"

When I tell it to change the icon, it gives me an error stating that:

Windows cannot find the file %ProgramFiles%\THQ\Gas Powered
Games\Supreme Commander\bin\SupremeCommander.exe

and I see that %ProgramFiles% is set to:

ProgramFiles=c:\Program Files
ProgramFiles(x86)=c:\Program Files (x86)

Which leads me to believe some environment variables problem?

THanks for your help!

yes i have still had no luck with any of the provided tips above
however i do appreciate the help. the odd thing i find is that when i g
to properties and change icon i can see the correct icon in the lis
there but i double click it or click apply whichever, but it does no
show up on my desktop. this has been the case since the first time
installed and booted up vista ult. 64 this time around. my only succes
has been to create a massive collection of icons on my backup drive an
change all icons to custom ones from that folder. pain in the but
really. but kind of fun in an obsessive kind of way??!

YOu are referring to (ink) shortcut problems. But do you also (like me
have a problem with the icons of files in file explorer (related t
certain program groups like microsoft office) that also disappear?
have not changed anything since the initial installation but just ca
not find the cause... I successfully restored the icons in the startu
menu (also had disappeared) but just cannot find for the icon
associated to files themselves (.xlsx, docx, .pdf, etc. etc.). An
ideas
