Icons in system tray grayed out

The icons in my system tray were grayed out and didn't work -- when I
right-clicked on them, I got the standard toolbar menu instead of the
one for that program. One or two was in color and worked, but the rest
didn't.

When I rebooted, they were just fine.

What happened here?
