1. Why aren't you running WinXP SP2 with all post-SP2 updates installed?
Frankly, I'd be more concerned about that.
2. As long as the Windows Firewall is enabled (and it's enabled by default),
it will be perfectly safe to update your new PC online. This should be the
very first thing you do when you get your new Vista SP1 computer!
