Greetings Dan,
It stays active if you're using the keyboard/mouse/input device in Windows, it's not specific
to Messenger. This question has been asked a lot lately and I admit I'm a bit curious why
you would think it would work otherwise?
And yes, being idle while say, a media player goes through an entire album and updates your
status is a possibility and can happen.
One minor exception you might be aware of is that up until the latest beta versions of
Messenger, if you are logged into your computer via Remote Desktop from another computer,
Messenger will assume you're idle even if you're actively working.
As for the Mac, I assume the initial question is the same, however I do not know about the
rest or how it works as I haven't really used Messenger:Mac much.
