IE 6 and then 7 beta -- freeze up and won't close correctly.

I recently reinstalled everything on a new HD; I'm running Windows XP Pro
with SP-2 and a 2.6MHz Pentium 4 with Hyper-threading, 2 GIG RAM. My IE 6
began freezing up occasionally; and sometimes wouldn't shut down
properly-I'd have to push the pop-up "close program button" to force it to
close-sometimes I'd even have to go to the Task Manager to close it. I got
tired of the problem; so I tried to fix it by installing the IE 7 Beta. But
it seems to misbehave the same way; Firefox and Opera seem OK.

What are the possible causes for this problem on a new clean install? How
can it be fixed?

Thanks.

Stanford

Did you format and then "reinstall everything"?

Thanks for gettimg back to me, much appriecated.

Actually, I used a new hard disk and naturally I did format it (to a basic
NTFS partition). I have also run the Windows "Check Disk" utility with both
option boxes checked. Any more thoughts?

I really need some help here -- I've tried all I can think of to fix
this program hang-up problem, so far nothing has fixed it, I just went to
the Event Viewer and looked for error messages that corresponds with the
times and programs that are "hanging-up" locking-up, freezing. Here are
some of the errors reposted;
first with IE 6 then the new IE 7 beta-- but of some small note there was at
least one hang-up with another program altogether--Nero 6. What does the
"hang address" imply? What is address 0x00000000? It rings a bell for
causing problems before --I think.
Is this something I should take to another newsgroup, if so which
one(s)...Windows XP or what?
Please Help.

***Hanging application IEXPLORE.EXE, version 6.0.2900.2180, hang module
hungapp, version 0.0.0.0,
hang address 0x00000000.

***Hanging application iexplore.exe, version 7.0.5346.5, hang module
hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang
address 0x00000000.
*Hanging application nero.exe, version 6.3.1.19, hang module hungapp,
version 0.0.0.0, hang address
0x00000000. BTW (Nero and other programs very, very, rarely
"hang-up").
Thanks again,
Stanford

[Upgrading, especially to a beta version, in hopes of fixing an ongoing
problem is seldom a wise idea. Doing so usually only makes trying to
diagnose the problem that much harder.]

After formatting and reinstalling Windows (and before installing anything
else), did you take care of /everything/ on the following webpage before
otherwise connecting to the internet (e.g., to browse, check email)?

Before You Connect a New Computer to the Internet
http://www.cert.org/tech_tips/before_you_plug_in.html

The most likely cause of your problems is hijackware.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
