Today I went to help a customer who was experiencing problems with slow
pc.
The computer was Win 98SE with 192 MB RAM. It was already running IE 6
SP1.
That problem was mostly resolved by disabling alot of useless programs
from msconfig but then I tried to run Windows Update and every time IE
would get to 66% on the win update site the IE would crash and ask that
you send an error report to MS.
So first, I tried to repair IE - same problem.
Tried restoring back to old version and reinstalling IE 6 SP1 - same
problem
The details in the crash windows state that iexplore.exe is crashing
but the module causing the crash was winspool.drv
>From what I understand winspool.drv handles the communication between
the OS and the printer. Why would this file be causing IE to crash? So
I tried replacing that file from the Win 98SE cd, tried running the
system file checker, tried reinstalling windows over itself, tried
removing the WinUpdate activex controls -- same problem.
So we never got that issue fixed. Any ideas how to resolve it without
completely reinstalling windows?
Is it possible that the Windows Update is looking to update the printer
drivers and invoking winspool.drv?
I couldnt find any info about this at MS Support site.
