IE 7.0 and Outlook Express

I recently upgraded to Internet Explorer 7.0.

Ever since then, whenever I compact my Email (Outlook Express) folders, they
are all copied to the Trash as .bak files.

Was this intentional on the part of Microsoft or is this some kind of
anomaly or bug?

Can't answer your question, as posed, but can offer a bit of additional
information.

I started getting the same behaviour, ie., Outlook Express folders being
sent to the Recycle Bin as .bak files when I compact them, after installing
the MS December security updates. In particular, I suspect, the Cumulative
Security Update for Outlook Express (923694).

This changed action occurred *despite* the fact that I haven't upgraded to
IE7; ie., I'm still using IE6.

It has nothing to do with IE7. It's an update for Outlook Express that
backs up your email messages when you compact. If all is well with your
messages after compacting, you can safely delete the .bak files in your
recycle bin.

Your suspicions are correct. It's an update for OE and has nothing to do
with IE7.
