Yesterday the IE 8 screen changed to display black in the boxes of the
tool bars. How can I get rid of this? Why did this happen?
Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the link. That was quick & easy. I'd installed the Yahoo
toolbar for IE; that must've caused the problem to appear. It's fixed
now, thanks to you!

I use XP Home ed. as OS. Have been running IE 8 for quite a while
now. Pretty sure it's out of Beta.

If you do a search you'll find various tips on how to
fix it. I've had that problem on one XP machine
intermittently. I also have a problem that it keeps
reverting to "Luna" AKA Fischer Price display, even
though I select Classic View. I still haven't figured
it out, as I don't use that OS much and I never update
IE any more than I have to. (I'm on XP with IE6. The
XP with IE8 is only for testing.) I recently re-installed
IE8 and that seemed to work, at least at the time.
From what I've read online I get a feeling that IE8
may have an incompatibility bug with Classic View.

Here's one of the links I found:

Sorry I don't have a more definitive answer for you.

Why? Nobody knows.

How? Right Click on the Desktop and choose Properties. Set the Themes Tab to
Windows Classic, and then back to what you want. If you want Windows
Classic, then set off of Windows Classic, then set it back. Be sure to click
Apply with each change. Then, go to Appearance, and make the same changes,
making sure to Apply the changes each time they are made.

My personal preference is that Windows should never change the appearance of
the presentation that I am exposed to. I like Windows Classic, and seriously
dislike any other presentation that Bill & The Boys try to make me use.

The Windows Classic settings in the Desktop Properties is the "why" that you
asked about. We don't know why it hoses IE, but it does. Switching out of
Windows Classic and back in again will restore the IE experience that you
have come to know and love.

Yes, this is thew fix.

This happens to me periodically after a reboot sometimes but seems to be
random.

An earlier thread - many months or years back - suggested that certain
items needed to bot in a specific order but some items may take longer to
load than others, resulting in them getting out of sequence. I don't hold
much for that myself but it could be considered.

Resetting the graphics by resetting back to a default (per above) works,
then you just reset back to what your earlier screen saver and background
choices are/were.

MS is not going to fix it so get used to it.

This does not happen to other browsers such as FireFox, etc, onlt IE.

I'm running IE8 on XPSp3, and it happenes every so often.

That's great! That's sorted that one.

It's been bugging me ever since Orange redesigned their front page.

Many thanks,

John.
