I installed the IE8 upgrade. When I click on an Icon Shortcut to a IE page,
IE8 shows the desired page. Also, a blank IE6 page opens. This IE6 page is
inoperative. Any ideas to stop this unwanted page?

Bob

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista x64 SP2) when
posting to this newsgroup.

Were you having any problems whatsoever with Windows and/or your previous IE
version?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Do you have an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?
<=Just asking for now!!

To elaborate on this problem. IE8 works fine even when clicking on links.
This duplicate IE6 page only appears when clicking on a shortcut icon.

Thanks for your response, Bear

I just made Google Chrome the default. No more trouble.

Unlikely, since Internet Explorer is part of the Windows operating
system. If IE is broken, so is Windows, so it's just a matter of time
before you'll be in trouble again.

Did you upgrade from IE6, or did you have IE7 installed in a "side by side"
mode with IE6 (which is unsupported by MS)?

1. Download/run the Norton Removal Tool to get rid of the Norton "leftovers"
then reboot:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039

2. See if disabling AVG then uninstalling IE8 returns you to a working
previous IE version. DO NOT REINSTALL IE8 YET!

I had this problem when I installed IE7 after too many emails with MS
support it finally went away. But when I installed IE8 it came back. I
was never sure what fixed it the first time and after trying all the
steps from the first email conversation with MS support again it has not
repaired IE8.

In short any IE shortcut, desktop or otherwise, first opens a blank IE6
screen then after awhile opens the IE8 screen.

XP Pro SP3, fully updated with McAfeeSecurityCenter and Ad-Aware
running.
