I have just approved IE8 for some W3k3 servers and workstations. After IE is
installed and the system restarted it detects that KB968997, KB972260 and
KB974455 are "needed". All 3 are approved for install but only KB974455 is
actually installed on the client. The other 2 are superceded but continue to be
detected as needed on the client. Clients that had IE8 installed earlier do not
have this issue probably because these earlier updates were installed
previously.

There does seem to be a logic error in the detection data here. Correctly
neither of the superceded update are installed but they continue to be detected.

Has the client actually reported that installation status back to the WSUS
Server? That's the point at which the superceded updates should switch from
Needed to Not Applicable.

The metadata looks good to me. I don't have a similar scenario here to
compare with -- KB972260 was previously installed and I've not yet deployed
the October updates.

In any event, knowing that KB969897 and KB972260 are superceded for all
versions of IE on all platforms, I'd be inclined to just decline them. In
fact, the SCW has already declined KB969897 on my system.

On all platforms I have after approving IE8 and re-booting a further 5 updates
were detected, the above 3 plus 2 others. After clicking the shield to install
these the WSUS console reported the above 2 as still required and the other 3 as
installed. So I guess reporting has completed with these 2 still being detected.
They are still there 24 hours later on hundreds of XP systems.

Yep, that's what I have done. I wonder if the SCW would ever decline them as
they are still "needed". It did not do so when I ran it 10 minutes ago.

Hmmm... that would suggest a defect in either the supercession detection or
the isInstalled logic rules. Given that they're already superceded though, I
wouldn't expect 'em to get fixed.

Not likely.

In my case the SCW declind then because the updates are not reported as
needed because I've not yet deployed IE8 to my XP systems.
